세종특별자치시와 세종시문화관광재단에서 개최하는 2025 한글 국제프레비엔날레가 9월 1일부터 10월 12일까지 세종시 전역에서 열렸습니다. 이 행사는 ‘2027년 제1회 한글 비엔날레’ 개최를 앞두고 시민들에게 축제 분위기를 확산하고 2027년 비엔날레 방향성 등을 정립하기 위해 마련됐습니다.

2025 한글 국제프레비엔날레에서는 ‘그리는 말, 이어진 삶’을 주제로 한글의 역사와 현재, 미래를 한국, 영국, 우루과이, 싱가포르 등 4개국 39명의 국내외 작가들의 시선으로 재해석한 다양한 작품을 선보였습니다. 또한 한국국제교류재단과 협력해 강익중, 구본창, 라 레콘키스타(우루과이) 등 유명 작가의 작품도 확장된 형태로 전시되었습니다.

이번 행사에서 숨 프로젝트는 영국의 세계적인 아티스트 미스터 두들(Mr. Doodle, 샘 콕스)을 초청해 처음으로 한글을 담아낸 작품 제작과 라이브 드로잉 퍼포먼스 등을 진행했습니다. ‘꼬불꼬불 글자’와 ‘꼬불꼬불 네모’ 연작은 한지와 캔버스 위에 펼쳐지는 선, 곡선, 점, 패턴 속에서 한글 단어가 어우러진 작품입니다. 또한 개막 첫날 시민 참여 공모로 선정된 단어와 두들랜드 캐릭터가 어우러진 대형 벽화 ‘한구들HANGOODLE’을 조치원1927 아트센터 외벽에 가득 채우는 라이브 드로잉을 공개했습니다.

길이 20미터, 높이 4미터에 이르는 대형 벽화 작업은 영국 이외의 지역에서는 가장 큰 미스터 두들의 벽화 작업으로, 전시 종료 후에도 세종시를 찾는 시민과 방문객이 언제든지 감상할 수 있도록 보존됩니다.

The 2025 Hangeul International Pre-Biennale, hosted by Sejong City and the Sejong City Cultural Tourism Foundation, took place across the city from September 1 to October 12. This event was held to build excitement for the “1st Hangeul Biennale” in 2027 and to establish the long-term vision for the upcoming festival.

Under the theme “Drawn Words Woven Lives,” the Pre-Biennale showcased the history, present, and future of the Korean alphabet through the eyes of 39 artists from four countries, including Korea, the UK, Uruguay, and Singapore. In collaboration with the Korea Foundation, the event also featured expanded works by renowned artists such as Ik-Joong Kang, Koo Bohn-chang, and La Reconquista (Uruguay).

A major highlight of the event was the participation of world-famous British artist Mr. Doodle (Sam Cox), invited by SUUM Project. For the first time, the artist integrated Hangeul into his work through his “Wiggly Letters” and “Wiggly Squares” series, blending lines, curves, and patterns on traditional Korean paper (Hanji) and canvas.

On the opening day, Mr. Doodle performed a live drawing titled “HANGOODLE” (a mix of ‘Hangeul’ and ‘Doodle’) on the exterior wall of the Jochiwon 1927 Arts Center. This mural combined characters from “DoodleLand” with Korean words chosen by the public. Measuring 20 meters long and 4 meters high, it is Mr. Doodle’s largest outdoor mural created outside of the UK. The artwork will remain preserved permanently at the site for citizens and tourists to enjoy.
