중앙일보 창간 60주년 기념 특별 전시 《장 미셸 바스키아: 과거와 미래를 잇는 상징적 기호들》은 9개국에서 수집한 회화, 드로잉 70여 점과 국내 최초로 공개되는 바스키아의 노트북 페이지 155장 등 총 230여 점의 작품이 소개되는 국내 최대 규모의 기획전이다. 또한 동서양의 조화를 상징적 기호라는 주제 아래 감상할 수 있도록 한국의 울주 대곡리 반구대 암각화, 훈민정음해례본, 추사 김정희의 후기 서예, 백남준의 비디오 아트 작품 등 한국의 문자와 상징이 담긴 주요 문화유산이 함께 전시된다.

이번 전시를 총괄 기획한 숨 프로젝트 이지윤 감독은 “장 미셸 바스키아는 짧지만 강렬한 생애를 살았다. 그는 8년의 작품 활동 기간 동안 독창적인 언어와 상징을 구축하며, 인종과 정체성, 권력 등과 같은 근본적인 질문을 작품 속에 담아냈다”라고 소개했다. 이어 이 감독은 “이번 전시는 인간의 보편적인 소통의 언어를 시각적으로 탐구한 바스키아가 시작했던 ‘기호와 상징’을 어떻게 구현해 나갔는지 보는 전시다. 초년의 작품에서 가장 마지막 작업에 이르기까지 8년 간 제작한 작업들, 약 70여 점의 회화 및 드로잉 작업과 이러한 상징과 기호에 가장 중요한 그가 직접 기록한 작가 노트 8권, 153페이지를 아시아에서 처음으로 전체 공개한다”며 “바스키아의 작품과 한국의 문화적 유산을 함께 조망해 동서양의 미학이 교차하고, 각 작품들이 새로운 해석을 만들어내는 장을 만들고자 했다”라고 기획 의도를 전했다.

장 미셸 바스키아(Jean-Michel Basquiat, 1960~1988)는 1960년 뉴욕에서 아이티 출신의 아버지와 푸에르토리코인 어머니 사이에서 태어났다.

바스키아는 디아스포라로서 자신의 뿌리인 카리브해 문화유산과 아프리카계 미국인의 투쟁을 작품에 담아 뉴욕 맨해튼과 브루클린 거리에서 형상화했다. 특히, 바스키아는 당시 새롭게 부상하던 재즈와 힙합 음악, 그리고 복싱과 야구 등에서 영감을 받아 독창적인 기호들을 회화 속에 투영했다.

바스키아의 작품은 강렬한 원색과 추상적 심벌, 그래피티 요소, 그리고 철학적 시구가 어우러져 강한 메시지를 전달한다. 바스키아의 작품은 고대 아즈텍, 아프리카, 그리스·로마 예술뿐만 아니라 현대의 만화와 광고 같은 대중문화를 폭넓게 아우르며 강렬한 시각적 코드로 인류의 문화적 유산을 결합시키고 있다.

2017년 5월 18일, 뉴욕 소더비 경매에서 바스키아의 1982년작 ‘무제’가 약 1,502억 원(1억 1,049만 달러, 수수료 포함)에 판매되며, 앤디 워홀을 넘어 세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 현대미술가로 자리매김했다.

The special exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of the JoongAng Ilbo, “Jean-Michel Basquiat, Signs: Connecting Past and Future” is the largest such exhibition in Korea, showcasing approximately 230 works, including 70 paintings and drawings collected from nine countries and 155 pages of Basquiat’s notebooks being unveiled for the first time in Korea. Furthermore, to allow visitors to appreciate the harmony of East and West under the theme of symbolic signs, major cultural heritages containing Korean letters and symbols, such as the Bangudae Petroglyphs in Daegok-ri, Ulju, the Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon(korean alphabet manuscript), the later calligraphy of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui, and the video art works of Nam June Paik, will be displayed together. Jiyoon Lee, director of Suum Project, who curated the exhibition, said, “Jean-Michel Basquiat lived a short but intense life. During his eight-year career, he constructed a unique language and symbols, and incorporated fundamental questions such as race, identity, and power into his work.” Director Lee continued, “This exhibition examines how Basquiat, who visually explored the universal language of human communication, embodied ‘signs and symbols.’ From his early works to his latest, he produced works over eight years, including approximately 70 paintings and drawings, as well as eight volumes of 153 pages of artist notes that he personally recorded, which are the most important records of these symbols and signs, and will be fully unveiled for the first time in Asia.” She explained the intention of the exhibition, saying, “By viewing Basquiat’s work and Korea’s cultural heritage together, I wanted to create a space where Eastern and Western aesthetics intersect and each work creates new interpretations.”

*Jean-Michel Basquiat(1960-1988) was born in New York in 1960 to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother. As a member of the diaspora, Basquiat incorporated his Caribbean heritage and the African American struggles into his work, giving form to the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York. In particular, Basquiat projected unique symbols into his paintings, drawing inspiration from the then-emerging jazz and hip-hop music, as well as from sports like boxing and baseball. Basquiat’s works deliver powerful messages through a combination of vibrant primary colors, abstract symbols, graffiti elements, and philosophical verses. Basquiat’s work broadly encompasses ancient Aztec, African, Greek, and Roman art, as well as contemporary pop culture such as comics and advertising, combining human cultural heritage with powerful visual codes. On May 18, 2017, Basquiat’s 1982 work “Untitled” sold for approximately 150.2 billion won(US$110.49 million, including commissions) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, establishing him as the world’s most influential contemporary artist, surpassing Andy Warhol.
