The Gift

현대미술 기획사무소 숨 프로젝트의 전시 플랫폼 숨 엑스는 사진가이자 개념미술가 천경우 작가의 개인전 “더 기프트 The Gift”를 용인공원 아너스톤의 첫 번째 아트 프로젝트로 기획했습니다. 2024년 8월 24일부터 25년 1월 31일까지 약 6개월간 아너스톤 1층 갤러리에서 열리는 이번 전시는 200명의 아너스톤 회원과 방문객 그리고 임직원이 참여하여 퍼블릭 아트 성격의 퍼포먼스로 제작된 천경우 작가의 신작을 최초로 선보입니다.

천경우 작가는 두 개의 작품으로 구성된 이번 전시에서 아너스톤이 상실을 추억으로 치유해줄 공간이 될 수 있도록 참여자와 관람객에게 인간이 근본적으로 느끼는 자신과 타인에 대한 감정과 기억을 예술적 행위를 통해 새롭게 경험하게 합니다.

퍼포먼스이자 설치 작품 ‘더 기프트 The Gift’ (2024)는 지난 7월 20~21일 아너스톤에 소중한 분을 모신 200명을 창작의 공동 주체로 초대해 진행되었습니다. 익명의 참여자들은 누군가의 손을 따뜻하게 잡듯 백자토를 손에 쥠으로써 자신이나 타인에 대한 감정과 기억을 새롭게 마주하게 됩니다. 이후 이 백자토는 작가의 손을 거쳐 타인을 위한 시간과 손길을 담은 작은 도자기 작품으로 재탄생되어 아너스톤을 찾는 수많은 사람들을 맞이합니다.

또 다른 설치 및 퍼포먼스 작품 ‘마주함 Facing'(2024)은 모양이 같은 서로 다른 크기의 의자 두 개로 구성되어 있습니다. 관람객은 크기가 상이한 의자에 즉흥적으로 앉아 각자 몸의 크기에 따른 낯선 체험을 할 수 있습니다. 의자에 앉은 관람객은 누군가와 함께한 기억, 혹은 자신에 대해 되돌아보며 작품을 이끌어가는 중요한 존재가 됩니다.

작품은 추모의 공간이라는 직접적인 상징성을 담고 있지는 않지만, 이로 인해 더욱 폭넓은 감성적 해석을 가능하게 합니다. 이로써 아너스톤에 모신 귀한 분과의 기억, 타인 혹은 자신의 관계에 대한 새로운 해석과 내면의 울림이라는 경험을 선사합니다.

SUUM X, the exhibition platform of the contemporary art agency SUUM Project, is pleased to present “The Gift,” a solo exhibition by photographer and conceptual artist Kyungwoo Chun. This exhibition marks the inaugural art project for Honorstone at Yongin Memorial Park. Running for approximately six months from August 24, 2024, to January 31, 2025, at the Honorstone 1F Gallery, the exhibition premieres new works created through public art performances involving 200 Honorstone members, visitors, and staff.

In this two-part exhibition, Kyungwoo Chun invites participants and viewers to re-experience fundamental human emotions and memories regarding themselves and others through artistic gestures. His aim is to transform Honorstone into a space where loss is healed through cherished memories.

The performance and installation piece, “The Gift” (2024), was realized on July 20–21, inviting 200 individuals who have laid their loved ones to rest at Honorstone to act as co-creators. These anonymous participants held white porcelain clay in their hands—as if warmly grasping the hand of another—to confront their feelings and memories anew. These clay forms were then refined by the artist into small ceramic pieces, embodying the time and touch dedicated to others, now welcoming all who visit Honorstone.

The second installation and performance work, “Facing” (2024), consists of two chairs of identical shape but different sizes. Visitors are invited to sit spontaneously in the varying chairs, experiencing an unfamiliar physical sensation based on the scale of their bodies. While seated, the audience becomes a vital part of the work, reflecting on shared memories with others or introspecting on their own lives.

Though the artworks do not carry direct symbols of a memorial space, this subtlety allows for a broader emotional interpretation. The exhibition offers a profound experience of resonance, providing new perspectives on the relationships with oneself, others, and the precious individuals enshrined at Honorstone.
