Heatherwick Studio: Building Soulfulness

A collaborative exhibition with Culture Station Seoul 284

현대미술 기획사무소 숨 프로젝트가 설립한 숨 X는 우리 시대 최고의 디자이너이자 건축가 토마스 헤더윅을 집중 조명한 『헤더윅 스튜디오: 감성을 빚다』전을 개최한다. 토마스 헤더윅은 기발한 아이디어와 창조적인 디자인으로 ‘영국의 레오나르도 다빈치’라고 불린다.

도쿄 모리 미술관과 함께 기획한 이번 전시는 서울의 역사적인 건축물인 ‘문화역 서울 284’에서 KCDF 협력 전시로 진행된다. 프로젝트 별로 다양한 미디어를 창의적으로 사용한 이번 전시에는 최근 서울시의 ‘노들섬 프로젝트’에 제안한 〈사운드 스케이프〉 등 새 프로젝트들을 추가로 소개한다.

또한 건축과 사람을 잇고자 하는 토마스 헤더윅의 미래에 대한 비전과 제안으로, 더욱 다양한 사람의 정서와 감성이 묻어 나는 새로운 건축 운동 ‘휴머나이즈’ 캠페인을 처음 선보이는 전시가 될 예정이다.

1994년에 토마스 헤더윅(Thomas Heatherwick)이 설립한 헤더윅 스튜디오(Hetherwick Studio)는 혁신적인 프로젝트를 수행하는 것으로 주목 받는 런던 기반의 세계적 디자인 스튜디오다. 이곳의 디자이너들은 다양한 재료의 연구와 최첨단 엔지니어링 기법을 사용하면서 동시에 전통적인 장인 정신을 존중하는 디자인을 추구한다. 헤더윅 스튜디오의 혁신적인 아이디어를 창조적이면서 상상력을 통한 자연 환경의 이해로 현실화하는 한편, 거대한 공간과 환경을 개개인의 경험과 같은 작은 스케일로 표현할 수 있는지 연구한다.

이번 전시에는 헤더윅 스튜디오의 주요 프로젝트 30개를 일곱 섹션에 나누어 어떻게 건축이 인간의 마음을 움직이게 하고 공감을 가져오는가라는 질문을 탐구한다. “공존하다”, “감성의 공유”, “조각적 공간”, “도심 속의 자연”, “과거를 담은 미래”, “사용과 놀이”, “휴머나이즈”의 섹션으로 나뉜 공간은 각 프로젝트가 탄생하게 된 배경과 과정, 그리고 결과물의 영향력까지, 마치 헤더윅 스튜디오에 방문한 듯 그들의 디자인을 가까이 경험하게 될 것이다.

Also known as the U.K.’s own Lenoardo Da Vinci and the greatest designer and architect of today with his creative designs, Thomas Heatherwick’s 『Heatherwick Studio: Building Soulfulness』 will be exhibited from June 29th to September 6th. Organized by curating company Suum Project and Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, the exhibit is a collaboration with KCDF at the historical Culture Station Seoul 284.

Following its success in Mori Art Museum in Japan, the exhibit will consist of different projects displayed through various media. It will additionally showcase recent projects taking place in Korea, such as 〈Soundscape〉 suggested for ‘Nodeul Island Project’. Furthermore, the exhibit will include an architectural campaign ‘Humanise’, which encompasses Heatherwick’s vision for the future in hopes to connect people to architecture, delivering human emotion and soulfulness.

Heatherwick Studio, established in 1994 by Thomas Heatherwick, is a London-based design studio internationally noted for its innovative projects. Its designers utilize research on various materials and incorporate state-of-the-art engineering developments while honoring traditional craftsmanship. They bring innovative ideas to life through inventive and imaginative dialogues with the natural environment. Furthermore, they explore the potential of expressing our expansive spaces and environments on an individual, intimate scale, resembling personal experiences.

This exhibition will introduce all 30 significant projects of Heatherwick Studio for the first time, reassessing familiar structures and functionalities while implementing new ideas derived from the process of trial and error. It will be divided into seven sections: “Coming Together,” “Connecting with Everyone,” “Experiencing Sculptural Space,” “Feeling Nature in Urban Space,” “Bringing Memories to the Future,” “Playing and Using,” and “Humanise.” These sections will facilitate the exploration of how architecture can evoke empathy and deeply resonate with the human spirit.
