FORBIDDEN FRUIT IN LONDON

런던 빅토리아 미로 갤러리의 프로젝트 스페이스에서 열린 이 전시는 2002년 성곡미술관 기획 공모 대상작으로 선정, 전시된 작업의 후속 전시다.

하지만 성곡미술관 전시를 재현하는 데서 나아가 국제적으로 명성 높은 작가들의 새로운 작품을 선보여 한층 확장된 담론을 제시하였다. 사이먼 페터슨, 리차드 우즈 등을 포함, 영국 현대미술의 핵으로 자리하고 있는 현지 작가들과 구본창, 노상균, 전준호를 비롯한 한국 현대미술 작가들이 ‘현시대 인간의 주소’를 시각화하는 과정을 보여준 이 전시는 문화적인 배경의 차이에서 오는 해석과 견해의 차이를 유도하는 작품들을 통해 한국 현대미술을 본격적으로 영국에 소개하는 최초의 전시라고 할 수 있다.

〈East of Eden〉전은 베스트 셀러로서 성서를 서로 다른 문화적 사고의 체계를 드러나게 하는 중요한 소재로 차용하였다. 성서가 특정 종교의 상징물이 아닌, 시대와 장소를 초월한 인간의 보편적 삶을 예시하는 도구로서 제시되는 것이다.

작가들은 성서가 갖는 이러한 의미에 비추어, 인간이 삶의 지표를 잃고 방황하는 세속의 모습을 거대한 스케일의 설치 작업과 영상, 사진, 퍼포먼스, 사운드로 표현하였다. 이는 이전에 시도된 적 없는 콘셉트 스터디를 통한 공동 작업으로, 한국 미술계의 금지된 영역에 대한 신선한 도전으로 평가되었다.

Opening in the Project Space of Victoria Miro Gallery (London), East of Eden is a sequel to “Forbidden Fruits” exhibited at Sungkok Museum of Arts in 2002. This exhibition is not a mere recreation of the previous exhibition, but an expansion on the concepts, showcasing the works of both Korean and British artists.

East of Eden has borrowed the notion of the Bible as a best seller that transcended time and place to forecast universal life, and not as a specific religious symbol, but to represent diversity and differentiated thinking. In reflection to this, the artists portrayed the reality of ‘the loss of indicator of life’ through installation, video, sound, performance and photography.

Through the act of inter-weaving British and Korean artists, this exhibition illustrates the difference in understanding and opinionating to the notion of ‘current positioning of humans’ that arise from cultural difference.
