아트클럽1563은 14번째 전시로 인도네시아 컨템퍼러리 미술을 대표하는 아데 다르마완(Ade Darmawan)을 초청하여 그의 최신작과 새로운 작품을 공개한다. 아데는 예술가 그룹 루앙루파 (Ruangrupa)의 아트 디렉터로 활동했으며 이후 루앙루파는 2022년 카셀 도쿠멘타 15의 예술감독을 맡기도 했다.

아데는 작가란 단지 시각적 작품을 생산해내는 것뿐만 아니라 작가 스스로 협업, 협상, 설비, 기획 등이 가능한 종합 프로듀서의 기능을 해야 한다는 믿음, 즉 새로운 현대미술의 정의를 바탕으로 동남아시아 현대미술계를 이끌고 있다. 이번 전시는 아데의 지난 2012년 기획 프로젝트의 연장선으로, 자카르타에서 공개된 바 있는 Permutation(2012)과 함께 서울에서 작업한 새로운 프로젝트가 처음으로 공개될 예정이다.

이 작업들은 작가가 벼룩 시장에서 낡은 물건들을 수집하는 과정으로부터 출발한다. 이 과정은 마치 하나의 ’의식ritual’처럼 프로젝트의 중요한 일부가 된다. 일상용품에서 인테리어 소품까지 다양한 그의 수집품은 한 시대의 전형적인 중산층 또는 노동계층 가정의 라이프 스타일을 보여주는 동시에, 그것을 소유했었던 누군가의 기억과 꿈, 성취와 좌절에 대한 잔상이기도 하다. 집집마다 흔히 볼 수 있었던 세련됨과 촌스러움이 혼재된 키치적인 요소들은 박물관 디스플레이처럼 재정렬되고 박제되어 새로운 환영과 판타지를 만든다. 한편 자카르타로부터 건너온 마모되고 빛 바랜 흔적이 지리적, 역사적 맥락을 뛰어 넘어 서울의 그것과 어떤 관계와 새로운 내러티브를 형성할지 기대된다.

1974년 생 아데 다르마완은 2003년에서 2009년까지 자카르타 인터내셔널 비디오 페스티벌〈O.K. Video〉와 2009년 자카르타 비엔날레-아레나의 예술감독을 맡았다. 루앙루파와 함께 그는 광주, 이스탄불, 싱가포르 비엔날레에 참여했으며, 2006년부터 2009년까지 자카르타 예술 위원회Dewan Kesenian Jakarta의 일원으로서 활동했다. 자카르타를 거점으로 활동하는 젊은 작가들로 구성된 비영리단체인 루앙루파는 현대미술의 인프라가 부족하고 상업 갤러리에 의존도가 높은 현실 속에서 현대미술의 실험성을 꾸준히 지키며 활동해온 그룹이다. 이들은 자카르타의 도시 환경을 둘러싼 예술의 사회, 문화적 문맥을 탐구하고 사회적 관계망 속에서 예술가의 역할을 고민한다. 또한 예술가와 다른 분야의 전문가 간의 탄탄한 협업 작업, 전시회, 아트 프로젝트 등 다양한 프로그램들을 통해 학제 간 연구와 국제적인 네트워크를 지향한다.

Artclub1563 is pleased to present its fourteenth exhibition 〈Home Theater〉 by Jakarta based artist Ade Darmawan. Darmawan, ‘the director of artists initiative ‘Ruangrupa’’ believes that the artist’s position is a professional cultural producer as well as collaborator, negotiator, facilitator and organizer in a contemporary context.

The exhibition 〈Home Theater〉 reveals a new project conducted in Seoul as a continuation of the Project; 〈Human Resource (2012)〉 and 〈Permutation (2012)〉 in Jakarta. The project began from the process of collecting second hand products from flea markets. The processing of consumption in flea markets is performed as an important part of the project, like a ‘ritual’. Using such everyday life products and interior decorations, his various collections present a life style of middle – or working class in a certain age but simultaneously shows traces of an anonymous memory, dream or illusions of achievement and failure which has been manifested. The kitsch re-juxtaposed and frozen like museum-displays sprout new metamorphosis and fantasy in the exhibition space.

Ade Darmawan (1974, Jakarta) as the founder of Ruangrupa, was the artistic director for the Jakarta Biennale-Arena in 2009 as well as artistic director of OK Video Festival from 2003 to 2009. With Ruangrupa, he participated in the Gwangju, Istanbul, and Singapore Biennales and he was a member of the Jakarta Arts Council from 2006 to 2009.

The non-profit organization, Ruangrupa is an artist initiative consisting of Jakarta based young artist. In Indonesia, even though many artists are still dependent on commercial galleries due to the lack of infrastructure and government support for contemporary art, they have their own autonomy and social expression strategizing on the mainstream of Indonesian contemporary art. The aim of Ruangrupa is to explore the relation of the social/cultural context surrounding the urban environment based in Jakarta and to redefine the role of an artist as a social networker. They encompass interdisciplinary studies and international networking through various programs such as exhibitions and art projects which are based on solid co-operation between artists and other disciples.
