20세기 초, 서구 현대예술과 모더니즘 미학의 도입은 한국 예술계를 전통파와 서구 모더니즘파로 나누었다. 20세기에 발발한 두 차례의 세계대전은 세계의 많은 지역들의 유물을 포함한 전통적 가치들을 파괴하였다. 파괴된 인프라를 재건하기 위한 국가적 차원의 노력은 서구 사회를 산업적으로나 문화적으로 빠르게 변모시켜 나갔다. 이러한 과정에서 새로운 문화들이 자리 잡게 됨과 동시에 전통 문화와 이전 세대의 미학적 가치들이 잊혀져 가게 되었다.

20세기 말, 포스트모더니즘적 현대미술의 도래와 함께 사라져가는 전통의 뿌리를 이해하고 현대적으로 계승하고자 하는 젊은 작가들이 나타났다. 전쟁 전후세대인 그들은 특유의 감성을 통해 전통 문화의 가치와 미학을 수용하여 현대문화와의 중재를 꾀하고 그들 세대 자체의 새로운 문화를 만들고자 하였다.

〈Lost & Found〉전은 6명의 한국 현대미술 작가들의 작품을 통해 잊혀져가는 한국 전통 미학의 가치를 재발견함과 동시에 현대미술이 이야기할 수 있는 범주의 다양성에 대한 실험적 전시이다. 또한 한국의 전통 문화에 익숙하지 않은 영국 관객들에게 현대미술로 승화된 한국 전통 미학의 가치를 소개하며 전통 문화가 갖는 의미에 대해 함께 생각해볼수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

Lost and Found curated by Jiyoon Lee examines how the forgotten elements of traditional art and aesthetics have been rediscovered and employed, by introducing works of six contemporary Korean artists.

The introduction of Western Modern art and Modernist aesthetics to Korea in the early part of the 20th Century led to the division in the art world between those who held on to the traditional East Asian cultural values, and those who embraced Western Modernist values. Although the former dominated the art world in the first part of the twentieth century, it was the latter group that prevailed in the post-war years; a time that was characterized by rapid recovery and industrialization alongside an almost blind following of Western culture and values. This waning of the traditional art values inevitably led to a decline in knowledge and the practice of cultural values and aesthetics well known to previous generations.

However, with the advent of contemporary art in the 1990s, Korea saw the re-discovery and re-application of the traditional cultural values and aesthetics by a younger generation of artists, albeit mediated through sensibilities that were profoundly different from the earlier generation of artists.
