이화여자대학교 조형예술대학이 현대미술 대안공간 〈이화아트센터〉를 마련하고 그 기획전으로 동시대 현대미술의 새로운 방향성을 제시하는 ‘텔테일(telltale)’전을 선보인다.

이번 전시는 뉴 미디어의 출현과 발전 이후 현대미술에서 더욱 중요하게 다루어지는 ‘내러티브(narrative: 敍事, 이야기)에 대한 내용을 다양한 문화권 작가들의 작품을 통해 조망해 보는 국제전이다. ‘telltale’이라는 단어가 ‘이야기를 말하다’라는 뜻을 내포하는 한편 ‘항해 중 배의 방향을 잡아주는 꼬리돛’이라는 의미를 지니듯 본 전시는 지금, 그리고 앞으로 미술의 흐름에 중요한 기여를 할 것이다.

시간과 공간을 함께 다루는 것이 더욱 용이해진 포스트모더니즘 이후 미술의 흐름은 과거 모더니즘 시기에 이데올로기적으로 치우쳤던 거대 담론적 주제보다 개인적인 서사와 연관된 작업을 보여주고 있으며 이는 국제 미술계의 중요한 추세를 이룬다. 작가들의 ‘작은’ 움직임으로 비롯된 이러한 개인 서사적 작업들은 국가적, 문화적, 사회적인 경계를 넘어 보편 인간의 삶이라는 장에서 공동의 서사로 승화되는 면을 경험케 한다.

이번 전시는 현재 유럽 미술계에서 활발하게 활동하는 독립기획자 이지윤 씨가 큐레이팅했며 스웨덴 아트카운슬 IASPIS와 덴마크 KUNST Council, 아시아나 항공이 후원했다. 참여 작가는 2003 베니스비엔날레에서 레드라이언상을 받은 아비쉬 케브레쟈데와 yBa(young British artists) 작가 중 한 명으로, 사치 컬렉션의 ‘SENSATION”전에 출품했던 제인 심슨 등 국제 미술계에서 실력을 인정받고 있는 30-50대 중견 작가 10명으로 이루어졌으며 그중 6명이 이번 전시를 위해 한국을 직접 방문, 자신의 작품 세계를 한국 미술계에 선보인다.

Comprised of the words ‘tell’ and ‘tale’, the ‘Tell-tale’ is a reference indicator or a sign which clearly signals that something is about to happen. TELLTALE weaves various narratives into one stream of thought.

TELLTALE is intricately involved in each narrative of 10 artists who are active in the international contemporary art market and their interrelations. Postmodernism made it comfortable to deal with the notions of time and space at the same time. After that, the trend of art has led most of the works which are related with individual narratives, not about the issue of ideological meta-discourse. In the international art field, it has become a major trend. These individual narrative works make the issue possible to be part of the public narratives of human life, beyond the national, cultural and social barriers.

These understanding and stream of narratives in contemporary art is a trial to explore that how these trends work in the 21st Century’s international contemporary art as a certain indicator. Furthermore, TELLTALE offers an opportunity to consider the direction of the trend.
