10 Korean contemporary artists Exhibition by invitation at Asia House

2006년 한영 상호 방문의 해를 맞이해 ‘Think Korea’의 주요 행사로 진행된 〈거울 나라의 앨리스〉전은 영국 문화기관인 아시아 하우스의 공식 초청을 받아 런던에 소개된 최초의 한국 현대미술 전시이다.

참여작가들은 1980년대 말부터 국제 미술계에 소개되기 시작한 국제 1세대 작가들이다. 전시 기간 동안 한스 울리히 오브리스트(서펀타인 갤러리 디렉터), 베스 멕킬롭(빅토리아 앤 알버트 박물관의 아시아부 디렉터), 알레씨오 안토니올리(가스워크 디렉터), 정도련(뉴욕MOMA 큐레이터) 외 영국 내외 문화계 인사와 참여작가들이 진행하는 다양한 전시 교육 프로그램 및 토론회가 진행되었다.

전시 제목인 ‘거울 나라의 앨리스 (Through the Looking Glass)’는 영국 국민 작가인 루이스 캐럴의 세계적으로 유명한 소설인 ‘이상한 나라의 앨리스 (Alice in Wonderland)’ 후속작의 제목이다. 전시의 기획을 맡은 숨 프로젝트 대표 이지윤 큐레이터는 한국 현대미술을 소개하면서 영국 문화에 바탕을 둔 제목으로 영국 대중들에게 더욱 친밀도를 높이며 접근함과 동시에, 영국인들에게 기존의 한국 현대미술에 대한 이미지와 고정관념에 대한 ‘다시 보기’를 제시하였다.

또한 이번 전시는 오랫동안 이국적, 식민지적 대상으로 간주되었던 한국의 이미지와 대비되는 국제화 시대 한국의 정치, 문화, 사회적 현실의 경험을 소개했다. 이로써 서구인이 기대하는 구태의연한 오리엔탈적 이미지를 넘어 한국 문화에 새로운 미학적 해석을 시도할 기회를 제공하고자 했다.

Through the Looking Glass derives its title from the second adventure of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’. As looking at one’s reflection in a mirror can be exhilarating and sometimes enlightening, “Through the Looking Glass” challenges our preconceived image of Korea through an eclectic mix of ten internationally claimed Korean artists.

Ten Korean contemporary artists participate in the exhibition and their works challenge the traditional Western values implicit within the interior space of venue and transforms it with their fresh viewpoints. Some of the works are weaved through the Asia House building which is a traditional Georgian building. As if Alice enters a new world via the looking glass in Lewis Carroll’s novel, the exhibited works placed at Asia House invite the audience to enter the pre-existing place through different meaning and contexts.
