지난 2010년 10월 서초동에 개관한 비영리 아트센터, 아트클럽1563(artclub1563)에서 2011년 9월 22일부터 11월 12일까지 그 다섯 번째 전시로 서울과 런던을 오가며 활발히 활동하고 있는 신미경의 개인전, 〈트랜슬레이션 – 고스트 시리즈〉가 열린다.

신미경은 특정 문화를 대표하는 역사적 유물 및 예술품을 현재의 관점에서 재현하는 작품 활동을 해왔다. 15년 전, 작가는 유럽으로 이주한 후 서양의 고전을 베끼고 본뜨는 작업을 하며 면밀하게 복제를 하였음에도 불구하고 원작이 지닌 문화적 의미를 작품에 담을 수 없다는 데 흥미를 가지게 된다. 그 후로부터 작가는 ‘트랜슬레이션’이란 타이틀 아래 시간과 공간에 따라 변형되는 문화적 번역에 대하여 작업을 해오고 있다.

작가는 대리석으로 만들어진 서양의 고대 유물과 조각상들도 수천 년 세월이 지나면 마치 비누처럼 닳아지는 모습과 그 둘의 유사한 질감에서 영감을 얻어 비누를 작품의 주재료로 사용하게 되었다. 이렇게 만들어진 신미경의 초기 트렌슬레이션 시리즈는 서양 고대 조각상들과 동일한 모습을 한 복제품이기도 하지만, 비누라는 유기적이면서도 변형이 가능한 재료를 사용하여 작가만의 방법으로 재해석하였기에 작가만의 오리지널리티가 되기도 한다.

이번 전시에서 소개되는 〈고스트 시리즈〉는 쉽게 깨질 것 같은 무라노의 유리 공예작품처럼 보이지만, 사실은 각양 각색의 투명 비누로 만들어진 비누 도자기 시리즈이다. 원본 형태에 충실하게 제작되었으며 값 비싼 도자기가 지니고 있는 견고함과 화려함의 요소를 제거한 작품으로, 작가가 특별히 고안한 몰드를 사용한 후 모두 손으로 파내어 제작되었다. 또한 그의 초기 시리즈 중 그리스 조각을 재해석한 〈몸을 웅크린 아프로디테〉(2002) 등을 같이 선 보여 도자기의 부드러움과 화려함, 조각상의 강하고 웅장함을 동시에 즐길 수 있음과 동시에, 비누가 지닌 고유의 향으로 관객들에게 또 다른 직접적인 체험을 선사할 것이다.

이번 〈고스트 시리즈〉에서 작가는 복제적 재현이 지니는 번역 문제에서 더 나아가 작품 제작 과정에 대한 새로운 음미를 통해 유물들이 내포한 예술 정신과 그 작품을 제작한 수많은 예술가들의 혼과 영을 탐구한다.

Artclub1563 is pleased to present its 5th exhibition, ‘Translation – Ghost Series’, by London based sculptor Meekyoung Shin, beginning September 22nd to November 12th, 2011.

Shin’s ongoing project ‘Translation’ is about the process of transference and recording of shapes and iconography across cultures through time and space. Shin has developed her concept of translation when the native and latterly acquired backgrounds of her artistic training in Korea were given a new perspective by moving to Europe. Shin’s soap versions of ancient classical sculptures and oriental porcelains relate to their ‘translation’ between East and West – how this inter- cultural transport affects the way they are understood and aesthetically appreciated. The Parthenon frieze felt uncomfortable in British Museum, uprooted from its history and original surroundings, such as the light, the positioning on a peak position and its naturally purposeful location near other ancient buildings. This led to these friezes to be represented in a different way. In turn, it led Shin to think about the shift in locality and how this alteration might cause distortion by the possible lack of the cultural understanding surrounding the object or area.

Using malleable soap as a medium, Shin has been re-creating historical artefacts and works of art representative of certain cultures from a modern point of view, in a process akin to translation.

〈Ghost Series〉 is a series of seemingly fragile, translucent soap porcelains. These translucent Asian porcelains resemble Italian Murano glass and they present the familiar sense of difference.

The four coloured porcelain bottles are made from the mould Shin created and sculpted afterwards. Through recreation, the artist not only found new aesthetics and interpretation, but has gone a step further to examine the spirit of the many artists who created the original works of her models.

In ‘Translation – Ghost Series’, exhibition, Shin will present rough and damaged Greek sculptors with fine porcelains also includes six statues that was originally exhibited next to a sink with the invitation to wash ones hands. This process led to its erosion from public usage, after which the works were exhibited like historical artefacts.
