Lee Bul: The Anatomy of Every Setting Sun

2026년 9월, 뉴욕 하우저앤워스에서 이불의 개인전 《모든 지는 해의 해부학(The Anatomy of Every Setting Sun)》이 열린다. 하우저앤워스가 이불과 함께하는 첫 전시로, SUUM Project의 이지윤 대표가 게스트 큐레이터로 기획했다. 주요 신작 조각과 최근 작업을 아우르며, 이불이 지난 40여 년간 지속해 온 현대성의 이상과 실패, 그리고 기술과 역사, 자연과 인간의 관계에 대한 탐구를 조명한다.

전시 제목인 ‘모든 지는 해’는 하나의 종말이 아니라 반복해서 찾아오는 수많은 끝을 의미한다. 이지윤은 이불이 오랫동안 탐구해 온 ‘약속되었지만 도래하지 않은 미래’와 그 이후에도 남아 있는 것들에 주목한다. 브루노 타우트의 실현되지 않은 유리 건축, 러시아 구성주의자들의 건설되지 못한 기념비, 토마소 캄파넬라의 『태양의 도시』 등 과거의 유토피아적 비전은 이불의 작업 안에서 다시 호출된다.

여기서 ‘해부학(Anatomy)’은 실패한 이상을 애도하는 것이 아니라 그 내부의 구조를 들여다보는 방법론이다. 이불은 실현되지 못한 미래를 다시 열어 그것을 구성했던 욕망과 구조를 살펴본다. 이를 통해 유토피아적 열망과 붕괴, 진보에 대한 믿음과 그 불안정성이 공존하는 현대성의 풍경을 드러낸다.

전시의 중심에는 17미터 규모의 비행선 형태 설치작품 〈Willing To Be Vulnerable—Metalized Balloon〉(2015–2016/2020)이 자리한다. 한때 기술적 진보를 상징했던 비행선은 PET 필름과 공기로 이루어진 거대한 구조로 변환되며, 진보의 낙관성과 그 이면의 취약성을 동시에 드러낸다. 이와 함께 2024년 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관 파사드 커미션 〈Long Tail Halo〉에서 발전한 신작 조각들은 신체와 건축적 형태를 결합하며 현대성의 기념비와 그 불안정성을 탐구한다.

〈Perdu〉와 〈Untitled (Willing To Be Vulnerable—Velvet)〉 연작에서는 자개와 아크릴, 실크 벨벳 등 유기적 재료와 인공적 재료가 중첩된다. 수개월에서 수년에 걸쳐 자르고 쌓고 연마하는 과정을 통해 완성된 표면은 빛에 따라 변화하며, 회화와 조각, 유기적인 것과 인공적인 것 사이의 경계를 넘나든다.

《모든 지는 해의 해부학》은 실패한 미래에 대한 애도에 머물지 않는다. 지는 해가 사라진 해가 아니라 다른 누군가의 지평선에서 다시 떠오르는 같은 해이듯, 이불은 과거의 유토피아적 이상이 남긴 흔적을 해부하고 그 안에 여전히 남아 있는 가능성을 바라본다.

In September 2026, Hauser & Wirth New York presents 《Lee Bul: The Anatomy of Every Setting Sun》, the gallery’s first exhibition with Lee Bul. Organized by guest curator Dr. Jiyoon Lee of SUUM Project, the exhibition brings together major new sculptures and recent bodies of work, extending Lee’s four-decade examination of modernity and its unfulfilled promises, and of the complex relationships between technology, history, nature and the human body.

The title, The Anatomy of Every Setting Sun, evokes not one ending but a series of endings. At the heart of the exhibition are the futures that were promised but never arrived, and what remains once we continue living in their absence. Lee returns to unrealized utopian visions, from Bruno Taut’s Alpine Architektur and the unbuilt monuments of Russian Constructivism to Tommaso Campanella’s City of the Sun, examining how these imagined futures continue to resonate in the present.

Here, “anatomy” functions not as an act of lamentation, but as a method of examining internal structures. Lee takes failed visions of the future, opens them up and examines how they were held together. Through this process, the exhibition reveals the coexistence of utopian aspiration and collapse, and the instability embedded within modernity’s belief in progress.

At the center of the exhibition is the monumental, seventeen-meter-long Willing To Be Vulnerable—Metalized Balloon (2015–2016/2020). Constructed from lightweight PET film and sustained by an electric blower, the airship transforms a historical symbol of technological progress into an image of fragility and impermanence. New large-scale sculptures developed from Lee’s 2024 Metropolitan Museum of Art façade commission, Long Tail Halo, bring bodily and architectural forms together, continuing her investigation into monuments, power and the unstable narratives of modernity.

The Perdu and Untitled (Willing To Be Vulnerable—Velvet) series shift the focus to a more intimate material scale. Mother-of-pearl, acrylic and silk velvet bring organic and synthetic materials together, while processes of cutting, layering and sanding create surfaces that transform with light. These works move between painting and sculpture, nature and technology, growth and decay, extending Lee’s exploration of futures that remain perpetually incomplete.

《The Anatomy of Every Setting Sun》 does not remain in mourning for futures that failed to arrive. As a setting sun has not disappeared but rises again on another horizon, the exhibition looks closely at the remains of past utopian visions and at the possibilities that continue to reside within them.
